The five-phased Jharkhand assembly polls will conclude on December 20. The electoral battle has primarily pitted the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) against the Opposition alliance of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), the Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). Pollsters have, however, also predicted the All Jharkhand Students' Union (AJSU) Party and the Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) to play a crucial role in determining the poll outcome.
In the 2014 Jharkhand assembly elections, the BJP had succeeded in forming its first-ever government in the state. The party had won 37 out of 81 seats, and its then ally AJSU Party had won 5 constituencies. The JMM and the Congress were restricted to 19 and 6 seats, respectively.
