Constituents that are polling on the first phase are Chatra (SC), Gumla (ST), Bishunpur (ST), Lohardaga (ST), Manika (ST), Latehar (SC), Panki, Daltonganj, Bishrampur, Chhatarpur (SC), Hussainabad, Garhwa and Bhawanathpur. The major contest is between Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Indian National Congress, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). Prominent candidates in the fray are state's Health Minister Ramchandra Chandravanshi, Jharkhand PCC president Rameshwar Oraon, and AJSU’s Radhakrishna Kishore.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has taken the decision to conduct assembly polls in five phases because of security reasons as 67 Vidhan Sabha constituencies of the state are affected by left-wing extremism. The poll-conducting body has deployed adequate security personnel to ensure free and fair elections in the state.
