Jayanagar, June 11: Voting is underway in Jayanagar constituency in Bengaluru, and over two lakh voters will finally cast their votes today. The reason for the by-polls in the constituency is because the election was cancelled after the death of BJP candidate B.N. Vijayakumar. BJP has therefore fielded late MLA's brother B.N. Prahalad.

According to an ANI report, former state home minister Ramalinga Reddy's daughter Sowmya Reddy is the candidate from the Congress party. Independent candidate Ravi Krishna Reddy is also in the fray. Counting of votes will take place on June 13. Post the withdrawal of Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) contestant Kalegowda, the contest is actually a straight battle between the two national parties.

According to a report on Hindu, there are 216 polling booths in seven wards in the constituency, among which five are pink booths. In the 2013 elections, Vijay Kumar won defeating Congress candidate M.C. Venugopal. Before that, Ramalinga Reddy won four times consecutively. The Congress, which won from the RR Nagar Assembly seat on 31 May, hopes to wrest the Jayanagar seat from the BJP, aiming to take its tally to 79.
