Voting for the Jayanagar seat of Karnataka Assembly took place on Friday, June 11 and a voter turnout of 55 per cent was recorded.
The election on the Jayanagar seat was countermanded following the death of Bharatya Janata Party (BJP) candidate BN Vijayakumar ahead of the Karnataka Assembly Elections 2018. Jayanagar saw a two-way fight between the Congress and the BJP. Janata Dal (Secular) (JDS) withdrew its candidate ahead of the election and announced support to the Congress candidate after the two parties formed a coalition government in the state. A total of 19 candidates were in the fray for the Jayanagar seat.
Of the over two lakh voters in the constituency, a total of 1,11,689 voters exercised their franchise in Jayanagar. There were 216 polling booths in seven wards in the constituency, among which five were pink booths. In the 2013 elections, Vijay Kumar won defeating Congress candidate MC Venugopal. Before that, Ramalinga Reddy won four times consecutively. The Congress, which won from the RR Nagar Assembly seat on May 31, hopes to wrest the Jayanagar seat from the BJP, aiming to take its tally to 79.
