Jawaharlal Nehru Birth Anniversary: PM Narendra Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind Pay Tribute to India's First Prime Minister
Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was born on this day in 1889 and became the first prime minister of India after the country got independence.
New Delhi, November 14: On the 129th birth anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind and Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu paid tribute to India's first prime minister. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was born on this day in 1889 and became the first prime minister of India after the country got independence from the British rule on August 15 in 1947.
PM Modi recalled Pandit Nehru's contribution to India's freedom struggle and as the country's first prime minister. "Remembering our first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on his birth anniversary. We recall his contribution to our freedom struggle and during his tenure as Prime Minister," he tweeted. "Remembering Shri Jawaharlal Nehru, our first Prime Minister, on his birth anniversary," President Kovind tweeted. 'Nehru's Legacy Being Undermined by Those Ruling India Today'.
Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu shared an old picture of Pandit Nehru, describing him as a legendary leader. "Tributes to the first Prime Minister of India and a visionary, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru on his birth anniversary, today. The nation remembers the legendary leader and his invaluable contributions towards the building of modern India," Naidu tweeted. Nehru's Granddaughter-in-law and United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday made a veiled attack at the Bharatiya Janata Party said the precious legacy of independent India's first prime minister was being undermined on a regular basis by those ruling the country presently. She appealed to the people of India to fight with determination to safeguard the country's democracy against those undermining it.
"Precious legacy of Nehru is being undermined daily by those who rule us today. They express disdain for Nehru for all that he did to build India that they are bent upon changing for worse. Today we must honour him by fighting with determination to safeguard democracy," Gandhi said while addressing a gathering at the launch of Congress MP Shashi Tharoor's new edition of his 2003 book 'Nehru: The Invention of India'.
