Jammu & Kashmir: Earthquake Measuring 5.3 Magnitude Felt in Parts of Valley
The tremors measured 5.3 magnitude on the richter scale, news agency ANI reported, further adding that the earthquake had struck at 8:13 pm (local time).
Srinagar, October 29: A mild earthquake was reported in sections of Jammu & Kashmir late on Monday evening, reports said. The tremors were felt in parts of the Valley, including the state capital. The geological surveys are yet to share details on the epicentre of the earthquake.
The tremors measured 5.3 magnitude on the richter scale, news agency ANI reported, further adding that the earthquake had struck at 8:13 pm (local time). Notably, this is the third earthquake to strike J&K within a span of a month. The tremors were last reported on October 21, when a 3.3 magnitude quake was reported in the Valley, with effects also felt in Srinagar.
Earlier, an earthquake measuring 4.6 magnitude was reported, with epicentre in North Kashmir. None of the quake incidents led to any casualties.
Jammu & Kashmir is part of the Himalayan seismic belt which is prone to earthquakes. The tremor-prone zone also includes Tajikistan, Gilgit Baltistan and Xinjiang. The worst earthquake to have devastated the region was reported in 2005, when recurring tremors of 7.6 magnitude ended up claiming the lives of 80,000 people in the Valley.
