Jammu & Kashmir: CPI(M) Chief Sitaram Yechury Stopped at Srinagar Airport as Restrictions Continue Post Article 370 Abrogation

Yechury was scheduled to attend a meeting called by the J&K unit of the CPI(M). A vocal critic of the ruling BJP, the communist leader had vociferously marked his dissent against what he called the 'unilateral' abrogation of special status accorded to the frontier state under Article 370.

New Delhi, August 9: Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Sitaram Yechury was at the Srinagar airport, where he arrived at around afternoon on Friday. The action has been taken in view of the restrictions currently placed in Jammu & Kashmir. The former Rajya Sabha MP is likely to be asked to take a flight to any other city outside the Valley.

Yechury was scheduled to attend a meeting called by the J&K unit of the CPI(M). A vocal critic of the ruling BJP, the communist leader had vociferously marked his dissent against what he called the "unilateral" abrogation of special status accorded to the frontier state under Article 370. Ghulam Nabi Azad Stopped at Srinagar Airport, Sent Back to Delhi

Prior to his visit, Yechury had written to Governor Satyapal Malik informing him about his intent to visit CPI(M) state unit chief Mohammed Yousuf Tarigami, who is reportedly unwell. He further added that as a general secretary of national party, he is duty bound to meet his partymen in all states of the nation.

"I propose to reach Srinagar on 9th morning to meet them. I hope the administration will not create any hurdles in discharging my responsibility as a leader of my party," Yechury had written in his letter to the Governor.

Update by ANI:

Notably, the CPI(M) has been organising protests in all parts of the nation against the revocation of Article 370 from Jammu & Kashmir while the assembly has been dissolved and none among the state's stakeholders being consulted.

"The promise by the same govt three years ago was to consult all stakeholders before any decision on J&K. But now the same people have been jailed and cut off from the rest of the country. All this threatens federalism and the unity and integrity of India," Yechury had said at a protest rally called in Delhi on Wednesday.
