Srinagar, May 6: The fifth phase of voting in for the Lok Elections ended in Jammu and Kashmir. Two parliamentary constituencies of Anantnag and Ladakh went for polls. The polling in Anantnag took place in three phases. The voting in the Anantnag district took place in the third phase on April 23, the polling for the Kulgam district took place in the fourth phase on April 29. In the fifth phase, Pulwama and Shopian of the Anantnag parliamentary seat went for polls in the fifth phase today. A total of 17.07 percent voting was recorded in the state. Terrorists lobbed two grenades at two polling booths in the state. However, no casualties reported.

A total of 22 candidates were in the fray in the fifth phase of elections in the state. There were a total of 6,97,498 voters in the two constituencies. Out which 3,61,630 were males and 3,35,854 were females and 14 were third gender voters. A total of 18 candidates contested from the Anantnag parliamentary seat. The parliamentary seat covers 16 Assembly constituencies including Tral, Pampore and Kulgam among others. JKPDP leader and former J&K chief minister Mehbooba Mufti won this seat in Lok Sabha Elections 2014 by defeating Mirza Mehboob Beg of the JKNPP. Meanwhile, in Ladakh, four candidates contested the Lok Sabha polls. The Main competition was between Congress' Rigzin Spalbar and Bharatiya Janata Party's Amyang Tsering Namgyal. In the Lok Sabha Elections 2014, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had won this seat for the first time. In the first phase on April 11, voting was held in Baramulla and Jammu constituencies, while Srinagar and Udhampur constituencies went to voting in the second phase on April 18. Anantnag and Kulgam districts of the Anantnag constituency went to polls in the fourth phase on April 29. The counting of votes will take place on May 23.
