Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad cautioned PM Narendra Modi to act cautiously in Jammu and Kashmir issue, as any wrong step might precipitate a deep crisis in the ongoing atmosphere of heightened insecurity and fear.
Srinagar, August 2: Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad on Friday cautioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi to act cautiously in Jammu and Kashmir issue, as any wrong step might precipitate a deep crisis in the ongoing atmosphere of heightened insecurity and fear. The statement by the senior leader arrived after Centre asked pilgrims of the annual Amarnath Yatra, along with tourists in Jammu & Kashmir to curtail their visit immediately.
Expressing his concern, Azad said, as quoted by news agency ANI, "Massive build-up of security forces, curtailment of Amarnath Yatra and also unprecedented advisories being issued to tourists, yatris and civilians are creating an atmosphere of heightened insecurity and fear. Adding more, he mentioned that Congress's J&K Policy Planning Group met after Centre's advisory was issued. Briefing the details, Azad said, "J&K Policy Planning Group of Congress met today under the chairmanship of Dr Manmohan Singh. Deep concern was expressed at continuous reports emanating from both Home Ministry and J&K govt which were creating an atmosphere of panic and apprehension about intentions of the GoI."
Earlier, Srinagar Airport Director called a meeting of Special Airport Security Committee after security advisory issued by Government of Jammu & Kashmir. This major development arrived soon after Centre deployed 38,000 extra troops in the Valley.
While, with reports pouring in about the closure of schools citing the advisory issued by the administration, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Baseer Ahmed Khan, said, "No schools in the district have been closed. I appeal to people to not believe any rumours. People should contact their concerned deputy commissioners for reliable information." It is to be known that the state administration on Friday issued a security advisory to the pilgrims and tourists in J&K, stating "that they may curtail their stay in the Valley immediately and take necessary measures to return as soon as possible".
