Srinagar, August 6: A day after the bill bifurcating state of Jammu and Kashmir into two separate Union Territories (UT) namely Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh was passed in the Rajya Sabha and taking into account the possibility of large scale unrest that can follow, Northern Command, Lt Gen Ranbir Singh chaired a meeting of the Core Group of Intelligence and Security agencies at Srinagar on Tuesday. Kashmir Special Status Scrapped, Amit Shah Promises Speedy Development in Next 5 Years.

The meeting was chaired to review the operational readiness in case of an untoward situation developing in the valley. Lt Gen Ranbir Singh was quoted saying by news agency ANI that, "necessary security arrangements put in place for ensuring peace&security". Article 370 Debate in Lok Sabha, Live News Updates.

The Indian Armed forces, including the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force were all put an alert after the government announced on Monday, August 5, that the "temporary provisions" of Article 370, which gives the state of Jammu and Kashmir a special status will be done away with. The government has expressed apprehension that Pakistan might try to take advantage of the situation and trigger 'Fidayeen' attacks in the valley. Section 144 is in effect in Jammu and Kashmir from Sunday night and curfew is in place at many places. The Army deployment has also gone up with additional troops airlifted to combat any situation, said the Army. Internet connectivity continues to be snapped, in the valley.
