In Jalgaon, where a total of 75 seats will be contested across 19 wards, a total of 303 candidates are in the fray. The municipal body has a total registered electoral strength of 3,65,072 voters.

In the Sangli-Miraj- Kupwad Municipal Corporation (SMKMC), a total of 78 seats will be contested. As many as 451 candidates have entered the poll fray. The civic body has a total of 4,24,179 eligible voters.

State Election Commissioner J S Saharia, while speaking to reporters today, said 1,031 polling booths have been earmarked for the two states combined, as a grand total of  7,89,251 voters will be eligible to cast their mandate.

For the smooth conduct of the polls, 5,792 election staff have been deployed on duty in the two cities.

The municipal elections hold key to the prospects of major political parties ahead of the assembly elections next year.

In Jalgaon, the BJP had emerged as the single-largest party in the 2013 polls, with 15 corporators of the party being elected. MNS and NCP stood second and third respectively with 12 and 11 winning corporators. A total of 36 independents or those from smaller parties had emerged victorious. A post-poll alliance was inked by the BJP to rule the civic body.

SMKMC, however, is a time-tested bastion of the Congress as its veteran later, late Patangrao Kadam hailed from the region. In the last elections, the party had won 41 of the 78 seats, with the NCP emerging a distant second with 11 corporators. The BJP had failed to open its account.
