'Jai Shri Ram', 'Vande Matram' Slogans Raised as Asaduddin Owaisi, Shafiqur Rahman Take Oath as MPs

Slogans of Vande Mataram and Jai Shri Ram were raised when All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), Asaduddin Owaisi and Samajwadi Party MP Shafiqur Rahman Barq took oath in Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

New Delhi, June 18: Slogans such as "Vande Mataram" and "Jai Shri Ram" were raised when All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), Asaduddin Owaisi and Samajwadi Party MP Shafiqur Rahman Barq took oath in Lok Sabha on Tuesday. When Owaisi came to take an oath some lawmakers started chanting "Bharat Mata Ki Jai" and 'Vande Matram'. However, after taking the oath, Owaisi replied to the barbs. He raised slogans shouted, "Jai Bheem, Jai Meem, Takbeer Allahu Akbar and Jai Hind."

Rahman was also provoked by similar slogans when he was signing the papers after taking the oath. However, the Samajwadi MP after taking oath said that he will not say Vande Matram as it is against Islam. 17th Lok Sabha's First Session From Monday; Budget, Triple Talaq in Focus.

Congress leader and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi was also greeted with slogans of "Jai Shri Ram" and "Bharat Mata ki Jai" when she was taking the oath. The first session of the 17th Lok Sabha commenced from Monday during which the passage of the Union Budget and key legislations such as triple talaq will be on top of the agenda for the government. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, chairing an all-party meeting on the eve of the first session, invited heads of all parties to a meeting on June 19 who have an MP either in the Lower House or the Rajya Sabha to discuss the "one nation, one election" issue.
