Kolkata, May 27: Weeks after the social icon Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar's statue was vandalised in Kolkata, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government appointed new Home Secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay and five-member Committee to probe the matter. The 200-year-old statue was vandalised during the clash at Amit Shah's Lok Sabha rally on May 14.
Earlier on May 16, the Kolkata police constituted Special Investigation Team (SIT) for an investigation into the case. Soon after the incident, Election Commission curtailed the poll campaigning timing till 10 pm Thursday in West Bengal and this sparked the war of words among political parties in the state. Even West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi had condemned the vandalising of a bust of 19th century Bengali icon Iswarchandra Vidyasagar at a college. He had assured that the culprits would be traced and punished.
According to the details, violence erupted during Shah's rally on May 14 after the sixth phase of Lok Sabha polling and miscreants entered Vidyasagar College in Kolkata. After this, they vandalised the statue of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar at Vidyasagar College, which is affiliated to Calcutta University.
