If Congress Repeats 5-State Assembly Elections 2018 Results in 2019 Lok Sabha Polls, How Many Parliamentary Seats it Will Gain?
At this vote share, the Congress would end up gaining 34 seats vis-a-vis 2014, whereas, the BJP would suffer a loss of 38 constituencies, pollsters predict.
New Delhi, December 11: After suffering from a string of losses since its debacle in the 2014 general elections, the Congress on Tuesday staged a massive comeback, regaining two major Hindi heartland states - Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh from the BJP - while emerging as the prime contender to form the government in Madhya Pradesh. The party has succeeded in outperforming its saffron rival in terms of seats, as well as vote share, in the three northern states.
Calling it the biggest victory for the Congress in the last 4 years, pollsters said the verdict would serve as a shot in the arm for the Rahul Gandhi-led party ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. To find a direct impact on the five-state pollson the parliamentary elections early next year, the political pundits attempted to decode the number of Lok Sabha seats the Congress could win if it repeats the same performance in MP, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Telangana and Mizoram in April-May. According to ABP News experts, if the Congress secures a similar vote share, it is bound to win 40 of the 83 seats which the above 5 states contribute to the Lok Sabha. In 2014, the Congress was reduced to 6 constituencies from these 83 parliamentary segments combined.
Notably, the maximum Lok Sabha seats are contributed by Madhya Pradesh -- from where 29 MPs are elected to the Parliament. It is followed by Rajasthan, which sends 25 lawmakers to the Lower House, followed by 17 from Telangana and 2 from Mizoram.
Here's the turnaround which pollsters predict if Congress holds on to its current vote share:
Parties | BJP | Congress |
2014 | 63 | 6 |
2019 | 25 (Predicted) | 40 (Predicted) |
Therefore, at this vote share, the Congress would end up gaining 34 seats vis-a-vis 2014, whereas, the BJP would suffer a loss of 38 constituencies.
Reacting to the performance of the Congress, party president Rahul Gandhi said Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "falsehood" has been exposed. "He will be defeated in 2019. We will reclaim the democratic fabric of our nation and once again strengthen all our institutions," he added.
