The constituency of Ichalkaranji is one of the 288 Vidhan Sabha (Legislative Assembly) constituencies in Maharashtra. Geographically, the Ichalkaranji constituency comes under the ambit of Kolhapur district. The Election Commission of India (ECI) had announced the dates of Maharashtra Assembly Elections 2019 to be October 21, and since the voting will be in a single-phase manner, Ichalkaranji with other constituencies will vote on the same day.

Suresh Halvankar, who belongs from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is the sitting MLA from this constituency. In 2014 Maharashtra Assembly Elections, he defeated Congress’ candidate by securing 94,923 votes in his favour. In 2009 Maharashtra Assembly Polls too, it was Suresh who had won from Ichalkaranji constituency. Halvankar will be fighting the 2019 polls as well on a BJP ticket, against Khanjire Rahul Prakash of the Congress among other candidates.

The Election Commission announced the election dates of both the states, i.e. Maharashtra and Haryana, on September 21. The candidates could last fill their forms of nomination till October 5, and if they wanted to withdraw, the deadline by the EC was October 7.

The EC, while announcing the election dates, had said that the voting in both Maharashtra and Haryana will take place on a single day, i.e. October 21. The votes will be counted on October 24, and the results will be declared on the same day. As per the EC, all the electoral procedures will be completed before Diwali 2019, i.e., October 28.

During the announcement of Elections 2019, the EC also directed the poll authorities to ensure all facilities and services are offered to specially-abled people and senior citizens. The poll agency further directed the concerned officials to ensure that at least one polling station in every assembly constituency is women-exclusive only.

There are 288 seats in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. The current term is set to end on November 9.
