Hyderabad 'Encounter' Draws Mixed Political Reactions: From Asaduddin Owaisi to P Chidambaram, Here's Who Said What

With the controversial encounter of four rape accused by the Cyberabad Police in Hyderabad gaining political momentum, voices from the several political and non-political front have popped up. Here are some of the opinions expressed by political leaders.

Hyderabad/New Delhi, December 6: With the controversial encounter of four rape accused by the Cyberabad Police in Hyderabad gaining political momentum, voices from the several political and non-political front have popped up. On one side, some are justifying the encounter by the Cyberabad Police Chief VC Sajjanar, while on the other some believe that police should not have taken the law into their hands.

Commenting on the encounter of the rape accused, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi said that he doesn't support the encounter. He said, "I am against encounters. Even, National Human Rights Commission has taken cognizance of the encounter." BJP and former cricketer Gautam Gambhir opined that the judicial system needs to be reformed. He said, "Judicial system needs to be reformed. The verdict of fast track court should be final & there should be no further appeals or mercy petitions for the death penalty. If they (accused in veterinarian rape &murder case) were trying to escape then, I stand with police."

Supporting the encounter, Baba Ramdev said, "What police has done is very courageous, and I must say that justice has been delivered. Legal questions over it are a different matter, but I am sure people of the country are at peace now." However, Samajwadi Party leader Jaya Bachchan stated that Justice delayed by not denied. She said, "Der aaye, durust aaye...der aaye, bohot der aaye."

Expressing similar views, RJD leader Rabri Devi said, "What happened in Hyderabad will act as a deterrent against criminals surely, we welcome this. In Bihar as well, cases of crimes against women are increasing. Even National Commission for Women chief Rekha Sharma stated that same. She said, "As a common citizen I am feeling happy that this was the end we all wanted for them. But this end was supposed to be through the legal system. It should have happened through proper channels. We always demanded the death penalty for them, and here the police are the best judge, I don't know in what circumstances this happened."

Meanwhile, former Home Minister P Chidambaram vowed for a thorough inquiry. He said, "I don't know facts of what happened in Hyderabad. Earlier, Cyberabad CP VC Sajjanar on Friday headed a press conference and briefed the media about the circumstances which led the police team to take such a step. Stating the reason for the encounter of the for rape accused, Sajjanar said they (accused) attacked the police with sticks and began firing at the police after snatching the weapons, which forced the police to reply in self-defence.

It is to be known that the four accused -- all aged between 20 to 26 -- were killed in the encounter which broke out between them and the police forces at 3 am post-midnight on Friday. The deceased have been identified as Mohammed Areef, Jollu Shiva, Jollu Naveen, and Chintakunta Chennakesavulu. Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao is yet to issue a statement on the encounter of accused in the Telangana vet rape-murder case.
