The occasion will witness the attendance of four sitting Chief Ministers - Punjab's Capt Amarinder Singh, Delhi's Arvind Kejriwal, Andhra Pradesh's Chandrababu Naidu and West Bengal's Mamata Banerjee.
Bengaluru, May 23: A week after Karnataka threw up a fractured mandate, the state will witness the swearing-in of Janata Dal (Secular) leader HD Kumaraswamy as its Chief Minister. Decks were cleared for the 58-year-old after his predecessor BS Yeddyurappa resigned on Saturday -- failing to prove the BJP's majority in the 222-member assembly.
Along with Kumaraswamy, Congress veteran G Parameshwara will be sworn-in as the Deputy CM, whereas, senior Congress MLA Ramesh Kumar will be appointed as the Speaker. The oath-taking ceremony, scheduled to begin at 4:30 pm, is being held at the Krantiveera Stadium. Stay tuned above for the live updates.
Out of the 34 ministerial berths, 22 will be allotted to the Congress -- based upon their larger electoral share -- and 12 will be kept by JD(S).
The two parties had inked a post-poll alliance to thwart the BJP. While the Congress had won 78 seats, 37 legislators of the JD(S) had got elected. The BSP, which bagged a single constituency, along with two independents have also pledged support to the coalition government.
The swearing-in ceremony will witness the gathering of a slew of anti-BJP parties. Among the attendees include Congress president Rahul Gandhi, his mother Sonia Gandhi, BSP supremo Mayawati, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi and CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury, among others.
The occasion will also witness the attendance of four sitting Chief Ministers - Punjab's Capt Amarinder Singh, Delhi's Arvind Kejriwal, Andhra Pradesh's Chandrababu Naidu and West Bengal's Mamata Banerjee.
The Shiv Sena and TRS, although have refrained from attending the event, have extended their wishes to Kumaraswamy. Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik, who was earlier expected to attend the swearing-in, also pulled out allegedly due to the presence of top Congress leadership.
