Bengaluru, May 19: Karnataka chief minister-elect and Janata Dal (Secular) president HD Kumaraswamy has deferred his swearing-in from Monday. The oath-taking ceremony will now take place on Wednesday as Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s death anniversary is on May 21. Kumaraswamy told ANI, “We are going to take oath on Wednesday as Monday is Rajiv Gandhi's death anniversary & so that is not a proper date.”
Today Kumaraswamy has been invited by Karnataka governor Vajubhai Vala to form the government in the state after Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP’s) chief minister BS Yeddyurappa resigned from the post. The JD(S) chief has invited Sonia Gandhi and Congress president Rahul Gandhi for the swearing-in ceremony. Kumaraswamy has also sent an invitation to West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu and Telangana CM K Chandrasekhar Rao. Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati is also likely to attend the ceremony.
The JD(S) chief Kumaraswamy also took a jibe at Yeddyurappa, He said that JD(S)-Congress alliance would not need 15 days to prove majority, it would be done immediately. The Supreme Court while hearing a petition filed by the Congress and the JD(S) ordered a trust vote to be held on Saturday.
The BJP emerged victorious on 104 seats, while the Congress and the JD(S) won 78 and 37 seats respectively. ‘Others’ secured three seats. The alliance has combined 117 seats including two seats of ‘others’. The assembly elections were held on May 12, and the results were announced on May 15.
