HD Deve Gowda Takes Jibe at Congress, Says 'Extend Support to Shiv Sena Only If You Won't Disturb Government Next 5 Years'

In a veiled attack on the Congress, Janata Dal-Secular (JDS) chief HD Deve Gowda suggested the grand old party not to break ties with Shiv Sena before five years, if it decides to support the Uddhav Thackeray-led party. Gowda said, “If Congress gives support to Shiv Sena, they should not disturb it for next five years."

Bengaluru, November 11: In a veiled attack on the Congress, Janata Dal-Secular (JDS) chief HD Deve Gowda suggested the grand old party not to break ties with Shiv Sena before five years, if it decides to support the Uddhav Thackeray-led party. Giving an apparent reference of fall of Congress-JDS government in Karnataka, Gowda said, “If Congress gives support to Shiv Sena, they should not disturb it for next five years. Slamming the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the JDS chief backed Shiv Sena’s decision of not supporting the BJP. He said, “Balasaheb gave place to BJP in Maharashtra, Advani and Vajpayee went to Bala Saheb's residence and requested him for seats. BJP overrode that, that's why Uddhav Thackeray has taken a stand that he will teach them a lesson.” He also urged the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Congress not to let the BJP to come in power in Maharashtra.

After weeks of political stalemate in Maharashtra, a political alliance between the Congress, NCP and Shiv Sena likely to become a reality. Earlier in the day, Shiv Sena MP Arvind Sawant said that a new government and alliance would be formed in the state. Meanwhile, Governor Bhagat Singh Koshiyari has invited the Shiv Sena to stake claim to form the government in Maharashtra.

In a bid to form the government, Thackeray held a meeting with NCP chief Sharad Pawar. The Thackeray-Pawar meeting is likely aimed at removing the final apprehensions in the alliance of ideological rivals - the Congress and the Shiv Sena. The NCP is likely to act a bridge between the two parties.

In the recently concluded assembly elections, the state witnessed a fractured mandate as the no political party managed to achieve the majority mark, Though the BJP and Shiv Sena fought the elections together, but the alliance fell apart after the saffron party rejected the demand of its warring ally of equal power-sharing including the CM post for 2.5 years each.
