Chandigarh, October 24: The Election Commission will declare the results of assembly elections in Haryana after counting of votes on Thursday. Haryana saw a four-cornered electoral battle between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and Jannayak Janata Party (JJP). Polling for single-phase election to 90 assembly seats in Haryana was held on October 21. According to the India Today-Axis My India exit poll result, the BJP is likely to win 32-44 seats. In the 2014 assembly polls, the BJP had won 47 seats, two more than half-way mark. The Congress, on the other hand, is likely to win 30-42 seats. In the last election, Congress won just 15 seats in the state. Dushyant Chautala's JJP is expected to win 6-10 seats in Haryana, the India Today-Axis My India exit poll predicted. Other exit polls, however, predicted the ruling BJP will return to power with a brute majority by winning 75 out of 90 seats. BJP's campaign was spearheaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while the Congress largely banked on two-time Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda's popularity in the state. Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi was left alone to counter Modi-Shah duo as his mother Sonia Gandhi and sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra did not step out to campaign for the party.
A total of 1,169 candidates are in the fray for the state's 90 seats. While the BJP and the Congress are contesting on all 90 seats, the BSP is in the fray on 87 seats, and the INLD is contesting on 81 seats. There are some 375 candidates contesting as independents.
