New Delhi, August 16: The Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to announce the dates of polling for the Vidhan Sabha elections in some states in India today, as surmised from the Commission's invite to the media for a press conference this afternoon. The terms of the legislative assemblies of Haryana and Maharashtra are about to end in 2024. As per the recent Supreme Court of India deadline, the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Assembly Elections 2024 are to be held before September 30.

With this in view, the dates for the Haryana Vidhan Sabha Elections 2024 are also expected, since the current term of Haryana assembly is closing in November 2024. Know the ending date of Haryana's assembly term along with the past election results and the current government status in the state.

When Does the Current Haryana Assembly Term End?

The last elections in Haryana were held in October 2019. The current term of the Haryana Legislative Assembly is scheduled to end on November 3, 2024. With this term's end close on the corner, another round of the Haryana Assembly Elections are due to be completed within the next three months to successfully continue the government without an interregnum. As the stage is all set for the Vidhan Sabha polls in Haryana, let us take a look at the 2019 Haryana Assembly Elections.

Haryana Assembly Elections 2019 Date and Results

The last Legislative Assembly elections of Haryana in 2019 were held on October 21 for a total of 90 seats in the Assembly. The Haryana Assembly Elections 2019 Results were announced on October 24, 2019, wherein a 68.20% voter turnout was recorded. The major parties that contested the Haryana Elections 2019 were the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led by Manohar Lal Khattar, the Indian National Congress (INC) led by Bhupinder Singh Hooda and the Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) led by Dushyant Chautala. Since an absolute majority needed to form the government in Haryana was a total of 46 seats, which none of the parties secured, the BJP and JJP allied to form a hung government in Haryana. Another alliance was also formed in this election between INLD and SAD.

Current Status of Haryana Assembly and What To Expect in the Next Elections in 2024

Currently, the 2019 BJP-JJP alliance stands no more. On March 11, 2024, as per former Haryana Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala, the BJP unilaterally called off the alliance due to disagreements over sharing of seats for the the Lok Sabha Elections 2024. A new cabinet was formed, with five MLAs from BJP and one independent candidate. As of now, the BJP announced its plan to fight the elections alone under the leadership of the current CM Nayab Singh Saini. The fight for the seats in Haryana's assembly elections will be majorly between the BJP, INC and JJP, along with an expected competition from INLD and its ally BSP.
