Lucknow, April 15: Guru Nanak Jayanti, the birth anniversary of first Sikh guru, will be celebrated on November 23 this year as per the official calendar of holidays issued by the Uttar Pradesh government. However, UP Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya and others among his cabinet colleagues thought the festival is being celebrated today.

Maurya, along with State Health Minister Siddharth Nath Singh, Technical Education Minister Ashutosh Tandon and others wished the Sikh community on Twitter, posting wishes on Guru Nanak Jayanti. After being pointed out about their faux pas, the Ministers deleted their tweets.

Here is the screenshot of the deleted tweets:

Maurya was followed by Siddharth Nath Singh:

Singh, however, issued a note of apology on the micro-blogging site, expressing regret over the error. He blamed Wikipedia for the embarrassment, accusing the website of providing incorrect information about the holy figure.

Here is the screenshot of his tweet of apology:

The faux pas committed by the UP Ministers serves as an example for public leaders to remain careful while extending their greetings on social media. Rather than confirming the facts, the leaders have lately fallen into a tendency to rely on social media forwards. The most incident which one could recall is of Union MoS Jitendra Singh and Information & Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani falling victim to the fake news of ex-CEC T N Seshan's death.
