In Gorakhpur, Samajwadi Party’s Praveen Kumar Nishad wins Yogi Adityanath’s Gorakhpur seat, defeats BJP’s Upendra Dutt Shukla by 21,916 votes. Pravin Nishad, the candidate supported by the Samajwadi Party in Gorakhpur had spoken of a "bigger alliance" if the Samajwadi Party won.
Congress candidate in Phulpur Shambhu Patel has lost his deposit. The seat has been wrested by SP's Nagendra Patel. The party leaders, however, expressed rejoice over the defeat of the BJP. "We have lost and we will evaluate what went wrong. But still we would congratulate the SP four defeating the communal forces," said Congress spokesperson Meem Afzal.
Samajwadi Party candidate from Phulpur Nagendra Pratap Patel has been declared winner by the Election Commission. The victory of SP comes as a major embarrassment for the BJP as the seat was last represented by Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya.
It comes as a shocker for the BJP, that it failed to hold on to victory in both, Phulpur and Gorakhpur constituencies. Both the seats were vacated by CM and Deputy CM. The winners are not declared yet, but the trends suggest SP is more likely to win the seats.As per the latest reports, the SP candidate is leading in Gorakhpur by 23,034 votes, and Phulpur by 39,681 votes.
After 20th round of counting in Phulpur, Samajwadi Party's Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel leads by 29,474 with 2,18,963 votes, BJP's Kaushlendra Singh Patel second with 1,89,489 votes
After 17th round of counting in Gorakhpur, SP's Praveen Kumar Nishad leads by 26,960 votes with 2,62,346 votes while BJP's Upendra Dutt Shukla second with 2,35,836 votes.
The ongoing results in the UP by-elections would have rung warning bells in the BJP ranks. The party is trailing in both the seats with SP extending its lead to an invincible one. In Phulpur, the SP candidate is ahead by 22,482 votes; while in Gorakhpur, SP has managed to extend its lead to 19,201 votes.
BJP is trailing on the seats which they had won comprehensively in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. In Phulpur, the SP extended its lead by 20,495 votes. Also, in Gorakhpur, considered to be CM Yogi Adityanath's bastion, the BJP is trailing by 13,000 votes.
As per the latest reports, the SP has moved ahead of BJP in both Gorakhpur and Phulpur constituencies. The SP candidate of Phulpur has extended its lead and is now leading by 15,713 votes; whereas the party is leading in Gorakhpur constituency by 14,600 votes. The BJP seems to be losing ground to SP in both the constituencies.
SP candidate has breached the bastion of UP CM Yogi Adityanath's constituency and is now leading by 3,760 votes. In Phulpur, the SP seems to be a clear winner as SP is leading by a margin of 14,299 votes as per the latest reports.There were reports of counting being slow in Gorakhpur constituency. Also, the media-persons were barred from entering the counting centre.
Lucknow, Mar 13: The crucial bypoll results of Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha seats will be declared today. The counting of votes was scheduled to begin at 8 am. The bye-election outcome is likely to shape the electioneering for 2019, with Uttar Pradesh being represented by 80 lawmakers in the Parliament. The Gorakhpur seat fall vacant after the incumbent MP Yogi Adityanath, who was representing the seat for five consecutive terms since 1998, resigned after he was appointed as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.
Similarly, bypolls were necessitated in Phulpur as the incumbent MP Keshav Prasad Maurya was appointed as the deputy CM.
From Gorakhpur, the BJP has nominated Upendra Dutt Shukla as its candidate, whereas, the Samajwadi Party candidate is Praveen Nishad. Congress, the third major contender in the fray, fielded Sureetha Kareem.
In Phulpur, the BJP had fielded Kaushalendra Singh Patel to take on SP's Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel. The Congress nominated Manish Mishra.
Polling in the two constituencies on Sunday was disappointing as only 43 per cent voting was recorded in Gorakhpur, whereas, the electoral participation in Phulpur was even worse at 37.3 per cent.
