Gorakhpur, Mar 14: Counting of votes in Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha bypoll is currently underway, with the results being expected to be declared by the Election Commission later in the day. The counting of votes for mega bypolls in the Phulpur and Gorakhpur Lok Sabha seats of Uttar Pradesh will be held today. Voting in the two constituencies took place on March 11, 2018, between 8 am to 5 pm, the Election Commission had said. In Gorakhpur parliamentary seat, a total of 970 polling centres and 2,141 polling booths were earmarked while in Phulpur, the EC had assigned 793 polling centres and 2,059 polling booths. The electoral size in larger in Phulpur, where the Commission has registered 19.61 lakh eligible voters, whereas, in Gorakhpur, a total of 19.49 lakh voters are registered.
The candidates in fray are Kaushalendra Singh Patel from Phulpur and Upendra Dutt Shukla from Gorakhpur from BJP against SP’s Pravin Nishad and Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel respectively. From Gorakhpur, Congress has fielded Sureetha Kareem. Congress, which had joined hands with SP in the assembly polls held last year, has fielded Manish Mishra from Phulpur.
