The seat, which was represented by Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) party legislator Yogendra Mahto, fell vacant as the MLAs is in jail under criminal charges and has been convicted by the court for two years.

The bypolls will be a test for the BJP government in the state as the opposition has united against the ruling party's candidate. The JMM candidate is supported by both the Congress and the JVM on the seat of Gomia. The AJSU and BJP, who are ruling the state in coalition, are fighting separately in Gomia as AJSU payed no heed to BJP's demand of not fielding a candidate in Gomai constituency.
