Gomia, May 31: By-election for the assembly seat of Gomia were held on Monday, May 28. Gomia, an assembly constituency in the state of Jharkhand, saw a healthy voter turnout of 63 percent for the assembly by-election . The seat, which was represented by Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) party legislator Yogendra Mahto, fell vacant as the MLAs is in jail under criminal charges and has been convicted by the court for two years.
The bypolls will be a test for the BJP government in the state as the opposition has united against the ruling party's candidate. The JMM candidate is supported by both the Congress and the JVM on the seat of Gomia. The AJSU and BJP, who are ruling the state in coalition, are fighting separately in Gomia as AJSU payed no heed to BJP's demand of not fielding a candidate in Gomai constituency.

Date of voting and results: The election were held on May 28 across Gomia. The results will be declared today by the Election Commission.
Last Results: In the 2014 Jharkhand Assembly Elections, Yogendra Prasad of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) party had managed to leave all the other candidates behind to emerge as the winner of the seat.
Reason for Bypoll: The Gomia constituency fell vacant after the JMM legislator Yogendra Prasad, who had won the seat, was convicted by the court. He was sentenced for more than two years in jail for unlawful activities and criminal acts.
Candidates in Fray: In Gomia, Madhavlal Singh is contesting against JMM's Babita Devi. All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) has fielded Lambodar Mahto. 11 candidates are in the fray for the seat.
It is pretty clear that on this seat it is the JMM versus the BJP. With the opposition parties supporting the JMM and the seats being won by JMM in the 2016 Assembly Elections, it should be no surprise if the JMM manages to retain the Gomia seat.
