Panaji, March 20: Newly sworn-in Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant won a crucial trust vote in the state assembly on Wednesday, with 20 legislators backing the BJP-led coalition. One of the BJP MLAs Pandurang Madkaikar, who suffered a brain stroke in 2018 and has not made a public appearance since, also appeared in the assembly and voted for Sawant led government. Apart from 11 MLAs of the BJP, three legislators each from Goa Forward and Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party as well as three Independent MLAs voted in favour of the motion. 14 Congress legislators and lone Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLA Churchill Alemao had voted in favour of the previous BJP-led coalition government in 2017, voted against the motion during the floor test.
BJP MLA Sawant was sworn in as the 11th Chief Minister of Goa on Tuesday, following the death of Manohar Parrikar late on Sunday evening due to advanced pancreatic cancer. Sawant, 45, was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Governor Mridula Sinha at a formal ceremony held at the Raj Bhavan in the early hours of Tuesday.
Apart from Sawant and the two Deputy Chief Ministers, nine other MLAs, all of them who were part of the previous BJP-led coalition cabinet headed by Parrikar, were also administered the oath of office and secrecy by Governor and inducted as ministers in the state cabinet.
