Lucknow, September 1: With less than a week remaining, the Ghosi Assembly by-election 2023 in Uttar Pradesh is now reaching its electrifying final phase, intensifying the competition between the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP). While it is a contest between BJP and SP, the Ghosi Assembly By-Elections 2023 is also viewed as a first round of the newly formed INDIA alliance versus NDA. The high-voltage Ghosi Assembly By-Elections 2023 will be held on Tuesday, September 5, 2023.
Counting votes for the seven assembly by-polls, including Ghosi by-elections, will be held on September 8, declaring the results by the evening of the same day. BJP and SP have amped up their efforts to win the Ghosi Assembly By-Elections 2023 with a staggering majority. The BJP aims to win the Ghosi bypoll to showcase its support among non-Yadav OBC voters before the upcoming general elections, even though the by-poll will not significantly change their overall standing in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly. On the other hand, the SP will try to upset the apple cart of the BJP before the Lok Sabha elections and attempt to send a strong signal to its core voters in the state. Why Ghosi By-Election 2023 Were Necessitated:
The Ghosi assembly seat went vacant after Dara Singh Chauhan, elected as an SP MLA in the 2022 UP assembly elections, joined the BJP. Chauhan, a former minister in UP CM Yogi Adityanath's cabinet, broke ranks with SP and re-joined the BJP, thus vacating his seat.
Candidates for Ghosi By-Election 2023:
The by-elections in Uttar Pradesh's Ghosi will witness a direct contest between the ruling party, BJP, and the opposition SP in the September 5 by-poll. The Akhilesh Yadav-led SP has nominated Sudhakar Singh, who will contest against BJP candidate Dara Singh Chauhan in the Ghosi assembly seat. The Boxanagar seat fell vacant after Chauhan switched to the saffron party after winning an SP ticket in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections.
Seen as a battle of prestige, the Ghosi assembly by-election 2023 will be a litmus test for the NDA and INDIA alliance ahead of the Loksabha Election 2024. The contest in Ghosi, largely consisting of minority voters, will be a trial of the BJP and SP's hold over the minority communities in the region. In Ghosi, out of the 4.37 lakh voters, there are 90,000 Muslims, 60,000 Dalits, and 77,000 upper-caste voters. As per the upper data, there are 45,000 Bhumihars, 16,000 Rajputs, and 6,000 Brahmins among the ECI castes. The absence of the Congress and BSP from the competition means Muslim votes will likely support the SP. However, the contest for Dalit votes will be crucial, as they are undecided and can swing the election.
