New Delhi, September 1: In a reshuffle, President Ram Nath Kovind on Sunday announced new governors for five states - Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra and Rajasthan. The appointment which became a talking point was of former union minister Arif Mohammad Khan who has been given charge of Governor in Kerala. Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan, who could never win Assembly or Lok Sabha election, has been appointed as Governor of Telangana. Here's a list of new governors appointed for Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra and Rajasthan:
- Arif Mohammad Khan: A former Congress leader, Khan will replace P Sathasivam as the new Governor of Kerala. Khan, who had in 1986 walked out of the Rajiv Gandhi Cabinet over the Shah Bano case, earned the praise of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah for being a vocal critic of triple talaq practice.
- Tamilisai Soundararajan: The president of BJP's Tamil Nadu unit will succeed ESL Narasimhan as new Governor of Telangana. Soundararajan was appointed the Tamil Nadu chief of the BJP in 2014. She twice contested Assembly and Parliamentary election from Tamil Nadu but couldn't win.
- Bhagat Singh Koshyari: President Ram Nath Kovind appointed Bhagat Singh Koshyari as Governor of Maharashtra, shunting out Vidyasagar Rao. An RSS veteran, Bhagat Singh Koshyari served as second Chief Minister of Uttarakhand from 2001 to 2002.
- Kalraj Mishra: President Kovind transferred Kalraj Mishra from Himachal Pradesh to Rajasthan, where he replaces Kalyan Singh as the new Governor. Mishra, a senior BJP leader, served as a cabinet minister in the first term of the Modi government.
- Bandaru Dattatreya: Bandaru Dattatreya has been appointed as new Governor of Himachal Pradesh. Dattatreya, who served as Minister of State for Labour and Employment during the first term of the Modi government, was elected to the Lok Sabha from Secunderabad constituency four times.
"The appointments will take effect from the dates they assume charge of their respective offices," read the press statement issued by President's Secretariat.
