Five Lok Sabha YSRCP MPs Resign Over NDA Government’s Failure to Grant Special Category Status (SCS) to Andhra Pradesh
YSRCP's party chief Jaganmohan Reddy had announced earlier that if Special Status was not accorded to the state his party MPs would resign in a group from the House.
New Delhi, April 6: Five Lok Sabha MPs belonging to the YSR Congress Party on Friday resigned from their seats in the Parliament. The MPs have resigned protesting the government’s failure to grant Special Category Status (SCS) to Andhra Pradesh. The MPs are YV Subbareddy, Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy, YS Avinash Reddy, V Varaprasad Rao and PV Mithun Reddy.
Both the Houses of the Parliament were adjourned on Friday sine dine. YSRCP's party chief Jaganmohan Reddy had announced earlier that if Special Status was not accorded to the state his party MPs would resign in a group from the House.
The five MPs met Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on Friday and tendered their resignations. The resignations had only one line written, "I hereby tender my resignation of my Lok Sabha seat in the House with immediate effect.” Now, the YSRCP only has a single remaining MP in the Rajya Sabha, Vijayasai Reddy.
As per reports, the MPs will now sit on an indefinite hunger strike at the Andhra Bhavan in New Delhi, demanding 'justice' for their state. YS Jagan Mohan Reddy took to Twitter and said, “We do as we say! YSRCP MPs are submitting their resignations today. I challenge @ncbn to make TDP MPs resign and stand united with the people of AP in their rightful demand of special category status for Andhra Pradesh”.
The recent move comes weeks after growing tensions between the political parties in Andhra Pradesh and the BJP government at the Centre. YSRCP's party chief Jaganmohan Reddy had said earlier this month that there will hold hunger strikes. “Across the state there will be relay hunger strikes by students at their respective university campuses and at all Assembly constituency levels by party cadre and youth along with party state leaders."
