The clashes took place during the filing of nomination papers for the upcoming panchayat polls. Two local reporters from Asansol were also injured during the clashes.

Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises and BJP Member of Parliament from Asansol, Babul Supriyo held TMC government responsible for the clashes. He slammed the state government in his tweet. Supriyo tweeted, “A template of the appalling state of affairs in WB-disregard to court's order of extending the nomination deadline for panchayat polls, TMC goons heckling opposition nominees, WB Police asking me 2 back off but does nothing to remove these goons off the street. Hw low will TMC stoop?”

The state election commission on Saturday extended the window for filing nominations by a day following a Calcutta high court order. The filing of nominations, which began at 11 am, will continue till 3 pm. The SEC has asked the police to make adequate security arrangements to prevent any untoward incident during the filing process.

The opposition Congress and the BJP accused the Trinamool Congress of ‘letting loose a reign of terror’ since the morning to prevent their candidates from filing their papers. The police and administration are mute spectators," state Congress president Adhir Chowdhury said, while TMC has rejected all the allegations.

Earlier this month, More than 25 people were injured in a clash between TMC and BJP workers during filing of nominations for panchayat polls in Jalpaiguri.
