Election Commission Ends Model Code of Conduct With Immediate Effect After Lok Sabha Results
The Election Commission confirmed that 'model code of conduct' has ceased to be in operation with immediate effect after results of 17th Lok Sabha Elections and Assembly Elections in states of Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha and Sikkim are out in open.
New Delhi, May 26: With the results of 17th Lok Sabha Elections and Assembly Elections in states of Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha and Sikkim are out in open, the Election Commission confirmed that 'model code of conduct has ceased to be in operation with immediate effect.
The Model Code of Conduct came into effect from March 10, after the Election Commission announced the dates of elections for the Lok Sabha in seven phases. Along with this, the apex poll conducting body had also announced the election schedule for the Assembly elections in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha and Sikkim. According to the poll schedule, the MCC came into effect on March 10, 2019, making PM Narendra Modi-led Union government a caretaker. It had stated that the whole procedure of conducting polls would have to be finished by May 27 and till then the MCC would be effective.
However, as BJP swept the Lok Sabha Elections 2019 and the results for state elections too are out with regional parties gaining maximum seats, the Model Code of Conduct has been withdrawn with immediate effect. The election commission has previously met President Ramnath Kovind and submitted him the complete report of elections - prepared by the poll conducting body.
