New Delhi, May 7: With the completion of the fifth phase of Lok Sabha Elections 2019 on Monday and reports of media persons being allegedly attacked by workers of Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, the Editors Guild of India has issued a statement condemning the physical attacks on journalists of various news agencies.

Condemning the attacks, the EGI in its statement wrote, "The Editors Guild of India condemns several of physical attack on journalists in West Bengal on May 6, during the fifth phase of polling. Journalists belonging to different media organisations including NewsX, ABP Ananda and Zee News were attacked, allegedly by workers of the Trinamool Congress (TMC)." West Bengal Lok Sabha Elections 2019 Phase 5: Total Voter Turnout In State Was 73.97 Per Cent. 

The EGI stated that that though physical attacks against journalists are always reprehensible, but particularly so during elections as they undermine fair media scrutiny of an election.

The Guild also Election Commission to initiate necessary action against the goons. It wrote, "The Guild urges the Election Commission of India to initiate necessary action against those who indulged in physical violence against journalists and asks the TMC-led West Bengal government to ensure law and order in the state so that journalists are not attacked by political parties and they can perform their professional duties safely."

It is to be known that since the first phase the tension in the state was high and the journalists were attacked in Raigunj in following phases. In the fifth phase, journalists were physically allegedly attacked in Hooghly, Barrackpore and Bongaon area. Even reports of their vehicles being attacked came to the fore in the fifth phase of polling.
