EC Issues Notice to 3 Media Houses for Predicting Lok Sabha Elections 2019 Results, 'Publishing Poll Survey'
The Election Commission on Tuesday sought an explanation from three media houses for allegedly publishing a survey "predicting results" of Lok Sabha polls. The apex poll conducting body gave 48 hours to these media houses to respond to the notice.
New Delhi, May 15: With just a few days remaining for the last phase of Lok Sabha Elections 2019, the Election Commission on Tuesday sought an explanation from three media houses for allegedly publishing a survey "predicting results" of Lok Sabha polls. The apex poll conducting body gave 48 hours to these media houses to respond to the notice.
Issuing the statement, the ECI said, as reported by PTI, "The ECI has received complaints against three media houses with respect to displaying poll surveys predicting results of Lok Sabha elections. The ECI has sought an explanation from these media houses... as to why action should not be taken against them for violation of a provision of section 126A of Representation of the People Act." According to the section 126A of Representation of the People Act, 'no person shall conduct any exit poll and publish or publicise by means of the print or electronic media... the result of any exit poll during such period..."
Adding on, it also states, "In case of a general election, the period may commence from the beginning of the hours fixed for a poll on the first day of poll and continue till half an hour after closing of the poll in all the states and union territories."
It is to be known that the Election Commission will start counting of votes on May 23 and would probably declare the results on the same day.
