The north-eastern state of Mizoram went for assembly elections on November 28. The Congress is ruling the state with 87 percent Christian population since 2008. The counting of votes will begin at 8 am today, and the result will be declared by evening.

The counting of votes has begun today, and the result will be declared by evening. Incumbent Chief Minister Lal Thanhawala will be eyeing a consecutive term for the post of CM. Meanwhile, the main opposition party the Mizoram National Front (MNF) will be looking to come into the power. Also, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which has not won a single seat in the last five assembly polls, will be looking to make inroads in the north-eastern state. In 2013, the Congress won 34 seats of the 40-member legislative assembly, while the MNF managed to bag only five seats. The NPP won just a single seat. In this elections also the main competition will be between the grand old party and the MNF. In these elections, 75 percent votes were polled, which are six percent less as compared to 2013. East Tuipui (ST): The East Tuipui (ST) Assembly Constituency of Mizoram state is currently held by T Sangkunga of the Congress. He is contesting the 2018 Assembly elections from the same constituency again. Meanwhile, Ramthanmawia from the MNF also contested the polls from East Tuipui. Serchhip (ST): The constituency of Serchhip is a part of Mizoram’s Serchhip district and is reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST) candidates. Incumbent Chief Minister won the seat in the 2013 Assembly elections. He also contested 2018 elections from this seat. Thanhawala won this seat in 2003 and 2008 elections too. Tuikum (ST): The constituency is currently held by Er Lalrinawma of the MNF beating K. Lianzuala of the Congress who was the winner of 2008. Lalrinawma also contested the 2018 assembly elections from the same constituency. Meanwhile, the Congress fielded Sangzela Tlau from Tuikum constituency. Hrangturzo (ST): Incumbent Chief Minister Lal Thanhawala won the seat in 2013 assembly elections beating Lalthansanga of the MNF. A by-election was held in the constituency in 2014, which was won by Vanlalawmpuii Chawngthu. Hrangturzo is a part of Mizoram’s Serchhip district and is reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST) candidates. Vanlalawmpuii Chawngthu again contested the elections on Congress ticket in 2018. Meanwhile, Lalchamliana of the MNF and K Sangzuala of the BJP is also in the fray. South Tuipui (ST): John Siamkunga of the Congress is the sitting MLA from the constituency. He also contested the 2018 assembly elections. In 2008, Thanhawala won the 2008 assembly election from South Tuipui. The constituency of South Tuipui is a part of Mizoram’s Lunglei district. Lunglei North (ST): The constituency of Lunglei North is a part of Mizoram’s Lunglei district and is reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST) candidates. P. C. Lalthanliana who contested 2018 assembly elections on the Congress ticket is the two-time winner from the same constituency in 2008 and 2013 assembly elections. Meanwhile, various exit polls predicted a fractured mandate in the state with the MNF in lead. As per the exit polls, the BJP will also make inroads in the state which may have an impact on the final result.
