New Delhi, August 7: The Deoria shelter home assault case rocked Parliament on Tuesday with Opposition demanding answers from the government. Home Minister Rajnath Singh made a statement in Lok Sabha on the case and praised the Yogi Adityanath government for taking "prompt action." He also assured a high-level inquiry into the case.

"Such incidents happening in Bihar and Deoria are being investigated with full force and we will ensure that such acts are not repeated in future," Singh said. He also added that action has been taken against officials involved in the Deoria shelter home case. "The culprits, in this case, will not be spared," he said amid uproar by the Opposition.

The Deoria Police had on Sunday arrested a couple and rescued 24 girls from a shelter home here after its license was revoked following an inspection by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Both the man and his wife were managers at the shelter home.

The incident came to light after a girl escaped from the shelter home and informed the police how they were all treated like servants. Superintendent of Police Rohan P Kanay said, "When the order to close this institution was made, our people went there and the organisation's director misbehaved with our team. Today, after a girl escaped from there, we got to the reality of that place. While 24 girls have been rescued, a search is underway for 15 others.

Deoria DM Sujit Kumar was ousted from his post following the revelation. Etah DM Amit Kishore replaced Kumar as the Deoria DM. Apart from the removal of Kumar, former district police officers (DPOs) Neeraj Kumar and Abhishek Pandey were suspended for not taking action against the shelter house.

The Deoria shelter home horror came to light just days after the Muzaffarpur shelter home rape case in Bihar came to the fore.

The Muzaffarpur Shelter Home case, where at least 34 minor girls have been raped and abused, came to light when a team of Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) submitted a report based on its findings, after it visited the shelter house. The Bihar police, on the basis of the TISS report, registered a case against the shelter home and Brajesh Thakur, the man who ran the shelter home and others suspected to be involved in the case.
