New Delhi, January 6: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday announced the polling schedule for Delhi Assembly Elections 2020. Polling for 70 seats will be held on February 8, 2020 while the counting of votes will be held on February 11. In Delhi, the poll battle will be between Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the upcoming polls.  The AAP is seeking re-election after recording a massive win in 2015. During a press conference, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sunil Arora informed that the total electors in NCT of Delhi are 1,46,92,136. The CEC said polling will be held at 13,750 polling stations across Delhi.

Who is the Current CM of Delhi?

Arvind Kejriwal, who is also the AAP Chief, is currently the Chief Minister of Delhi. Kejriwal came to power after winning the assembly polls in 2015. On 10 February 2015, the Aam Aadmi Party returned to power after a landslide victory, winning 67 out of the 70 seats in the Delhi Legislative Assembly.

In 2013, the Congress was ousted from power by the AAP led by Arvind Kejriwal forming the government with outside support from the Congress. However, the AAP government was short-lived and collapsed only after 49 days. Delhi was then under President's rule until February 2015.

Total Assembly Seats in Delhi

There are 70 assembly constituencies in Delhi. In the current assembly, AAP has its hold over 62 seats, BJP has 4 seats while 4 seats are lying vacant. The legislative assembly elections will be held in Delhi to elect 70 members of the Delhi Legislative Assembly. The term of the current assembly elected in 2015, will expire on February 22, 2020 and a new House has to be constituted before that.

The previous assembly elections were held in February 2015 after which the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) formed a majority government, with Arvind Kejriwal becoming the Chief Minister of Delhi. Polling in Delhi was held on February 7, 2015 to elect 70 members of the Sixth Legislative Assembly of Delhi. The results were announced on February 10, 2015. The Aam Aadmi Party secured an absolute majority in the assembly, winning 67 of the 70 seats. 

In December 2019, AAP had launched its election campaign for the Delhi assembly. The slogan that was used during the campaign was 'Achhe beete 5 saal, Lage raho Kejirwal' which means the 'past five years have been good, keep at it Kejirwal'.
