In Damoh, the BJP fielded its sitting MLA Jayant Malaiya, who was challenged by Congress candidate Rahul Singh Lodhi. Similarly, in Jabera, the Congress pitted its sitting legislator Pratap Singh Lodhi against BJP's Dharmendra Bhav Singh Lodhi. The Hatta assembly seat saw a tough electoral fight between BJP's Purusottam Lal Tantuway and Congress nominee Harishankar Choudhri.
In Pawai, Congress exuded confidence in its sitting MLA Pandit Mukesh Nayak and fielded him again. Nayak had a tough challenge from BJP candidate Brijendra Pratap Singh. In Gunnour, the BJP replaced its sitting legislator Mahendra Singh with Rajesh Verma, while the Congress fielded Mukesh Nayak. The Panna assembly seat witnessed an electoral contest between BJP's Brijendra Singh and Congress candidate Shivjeet Singh.
A neck-and-neck contest between the ruling BJP and Congress has been predicted by a majority of exit polls. In the 230-seat assembly, a party needs to win 116 to form a government. In the 2013 assembly polls, the BJP won 165 seats, the Congress 58, BSP four and Independents won three seats.
