Daman And Diu Lok Sabha Elections 2019: Phase 3 Voting Ends in Single Parliamentary Constituency of Union Territory; 65.34% Voter Turnout Recorded

The voting in the third phase of 2019 Lok Sabha Elections started on April 23. The Union Territory (UT) of Daman and Diu has a sole representation in Lok Sabha, which comprises of 543 seats.

Daman, April 23: The voting in the third phase of 2019 Lok Sabha Elections ended at 5 pm. The Union Territory (UT) of Daman and Diu has a sole representation in Lok Sabha, which comprises of 543 seats. A total of 65.34 percent voter turnout recorded in the union territory. The polling on this seat took place in a single phase manner only on Tuesday. In the third phase of Lok Sabha Elections 2019 today, the electorate in 15 states and UTs went for voting simultaneously.

The parliamentary constituency consists of two districts, i.e. Daman, and Diu. It is one of the smallest constituencies in India. Since its annexation in 1987, the UT has witnessed nine elections, of which both Indian National Congress (INC) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have won four times each. The sitting MP of the constituency is BJP’s, Lalubhai Patel.

In 2014 Lok Sabha Elections, Lalubhai Patel won the election after garnering a vote share of 53.83%. The second-placed Congress’ Ketan Patel got 43.26% votes polled in his favour. The margin of victory was over 9,000 votes.

Fast forward to 2019 General Elections, it had a two-way fight between the two candidates, who battled it out in the previous elections, i.e. 2014. The Election Commission of India (ECI), on March 10, had announced the schedule of Lok Sabha Elections 2019. The ECI also announced that EVMs will be used in every polling station across India. Also, the usage of Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) was also announced in every constituency so as to curb the suspicions of EVM hacking.

The Election Commission also said that the Lok Sabha Elections 2019 will take place in seven-phases, starting April 11. The final phase of the elections will be on May 19, after which the results will be announced on May 23 – exactly a month later after today’s voting date.

Along with the voters in Daman and Diu, the populace in Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Gujarat, Goa, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Odisha, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal will also be voting today.
