New Delhi, Mar 12: Centre has recently informed the Supreme Court that 1,765 Member of Parliament (MP) s and Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA)s, which comprises of 36 percent of Parliamentarians and State Assembly Members, are facing criminal trial in 3,045 cases.  The total strength of lawmakers in Parliament and Assemblies is 4,896.

As per reports, the Government had their hands on the details of these cases against the law makers with an attempt to put these cases on fast-track hearing to conclude the trial within a year. As per reports, the Law Minister informed that special courts are currently being set up in 11 states including Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Kerala, Bihar, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal.

The Supreme Court gave two months to the government to collect information on cases pending against politicians. Reportedly, as per an affidavit filed in the Supreme Court, the Centre has placed state-wise figure of cases pending against lawmakers which will be assigned to special courts to which will be set up to exclusively to hear these cases on a day to day basis.

Uttar Pradesh tops in the state-wise list of pending criminal cases against lawmakers, with 248 MPs & MLAs involved and 539 pending cases. It is followed by Tamil Nadu, Bihar, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Delhi and Karnataka.
