New Delhi, May 21: Hours after the Supreme Court rejected the plea of 21 parties of the Opposition camp seeking 100 per cent VVPAT count, the 22 political parties of the opposition have submitted a memorandum before the EC on Tuesday. In the memorandum, the opposition front had requested the verification of VVPAT slips of randomly identified (05) polling stations to be done before the counting of votes and not after the completion of last round of counting.
Along with the specific demand, the opposition front also stated that if during the counting of VVPAT slips, any discrepancies are found, then 100% counting of paper slips of VVPATs of all polling stations of that assembly segment should be done. Earlier, rejecting the plea of the conglomeration of opposition parties, the bench of Supreme Court - headed by Justice Arun Mishra - called this a "nuisance PIL". He added that these types of PIL "would not be entertained over and over again". Considering the previous order, the apex court had quashed the similar litigation of conglomeration of opposition parties last month. However, it asked the EC to increase the VVPAT-verification count from one per assembly segment to five.
In the meantime, the Election Commission has announced that the people would have to wait for the results of Delhi and Jharkhand by a few hours. Explaining the results the EC sais that the VVPAT slips counting would take few more hours after the final counting of votes is done on May 23.
