New Delhi, May 8: Days after being reprimanded by the Supreme Court for not genuinely expressing regret in his note of apology in the contempt case, Congress president Rahul Gandhi filed a fresh affidavit on Wednesday, tendering an unconditional apology for attributing the "chowkidar chor hai" remark to the apex court.

The Gandhi scion's affidavit is three-page long, reports claimed, adding that he has thoroughly apologised for attributing a remark to the Chief Justice of India led bench which it had not issued. The Congress chief has vowed not to repeat the mistake in future, while seeking forgiveness from the court. The contempt of court case was filed against Gandhi by BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi. She had cited the top Opposition leader's statement in a press conference where he claimed that the "Supreme Court has accepted that 'chowkidar chor hai'."

Update by ANI:

The previous affidavit filed by Gandhi was found inadequate by the court, with the bench coming down heavily on his counsel Abhishek Manu Singhvi, asking where is the "complete apology?"

Former attorney general Mukul Rohatgi, arguing on behalf of the petitioner, asked the court to take strictest action against the Congress chief as he has failed to genuinely apologise after committing contempt of court.

"He (Rahul Gandhi) deliberately put words in the mouth of SC, he has only expressed regret. Law is clear in contempt cases the line starts with unconditional apology," he had said in the last hearing on April 30.
