New Delhi, May 27: The Congress on Sunday appointed party veteran and former Kerala chief minister Dr Oommen Chandy as the state in-charge of Andhra Pradesh. Meanwhile, Assam MP and one of the party's prominent youth leader, Gaurav Gogoi has been given the charge of West Bengal and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

Gogoi has replaced senior Congress leader CP Joshi, who is now left with the charge of monitoring the party's affair only in Bihar. On the other hand, Chandy's appointment has relieved the duty of Digvijaya Singh -- who has faced flak since the last year for his alleged lackadaisical approach in Goa which allowed the BJP to form the government despite the Congress emerging as the single-largest party.

Singh, however, has been brought back in Madhya Pradesh where he would be heading the party's campaign coordination committee. The 71-year-old has earlier served as the Chief Minister of MP for two-consecutive terms.

Four days ago, the Congress had relieved Sushil Kumar Shinde from the charge of Himachal Pradesh. In his place, Rajya Sabha MP Rajani Patil has been appointed as the state in-charge. Meanwhile, the party also announced the appointment of four new All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretaries - Jitendra Baghel, Biswaranjan Mohanty, Virender Singh Rathore and Rajesh Lilothia.
