Congress List of Candidates For Mizoram Assembly Elections 2018: List With Names of 40 Candidates Released, Check Here

Aizwal, October 24: The Congress on Wednesday released names of candidates for 40 seats for the upcoming Mizoram Assembly Elections. Mizoram's incumbent Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla will contest from Champhai South seat, and Assembly Speaker Hiphei will fight from Palak seat. Mizoram is the only state in the entire North-East where the Congress is in power presently. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been reiterating that they would make all efforts to remove the Congress from power.

In 2013, the ruling Congress Party won 34 seats out of 40, while, Mizo National Front (MNF) managed to bag only five seats. One seat was won by Mizoram People’s Conference (MPC). Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla and his party are confident of retaining the power. In 2008 also, the Congress managed to gain the majority in the assembly with 32 seats. The ruling party received 44.6 percent of votes in 2013, while the MNF managed to get only 28.7 percent of votes. The MPC gained negligible 6.2 percent votes.

Single-phase Assembly polls in the state will be held on November 28. Along with Mizoram, four other states - Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Telangana are going for assembly elections this year. Voting for the first phase of Chhattisgarh will be held on November 12 in 18 districts and Northern Chhattisgarh, it will be held on November 20. In Madhya Pradesh and Mizoram, voting will take place on November 28. In Rajasthan and Telangana, voting will be held on December 7. Meanwhile, counting of votes for all the states will be done on December 11.
