Mumbai, September 27: The Chimur assembly seat in Maharashtra's Chandrapur district went to polls on October 21. The Chimur constituency saw a fight between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress. In the last four elections, the Congress bagged the seat twice (from 1999 to 2004 and 2009 to 2014). In 2014, BJP's Banti Bhangdiya was elected as MLA from Chimur. Notably, the Shiv Sena snapped ties with the BJP and went solo in the poll. Similarly, the Congress and the NCP contested elections without forming an alliance. This time, however, the BJP reached an understanding with the Shiv Sena over the seat-sharing issue. The Congress and the NCP also decided to contest 125 seats each in the Maharashtra assembly elections. After the results were announced, incumbent MLA Banti Bhangdiya was elected again over Congress's Satish Manohar Warjukar. According to the schedule of Maharashtra polls, the last date for filing nominations was October 4. The poll panel scrutinised nominations on October 5. The last date for withdrawal of candidature was October 7. Voting took place at as many as 90,403 polling stations on October 21. The Election Commission announced results on October 24. The term of Maharashtra assembly ends on November 9. In the 2014 Maharashtra assembly elections, the BJP emerged as the single largest party winning 122 seats. The Shiv Sena came second with 63 seats. The Congress and NCP bagged 42 and 41 seats respectively. Bahujan Vikash Aghadi and the PWP won three seats each, while the AIMIM secured two seats. Remaining seats were won by other small parties and independent candidates.
