Raipur, December 25: The results of elections held in 151 urban local bodies in Chhattisgarh were declared on Wednesday. Of 2,032 wards where polls where held on December 21, the ruling Congress has won 923 at the time of filing this report. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was not far behind and has bagged 814 wards. The Janata Congress Chhattisgarh (J) of Ajit Jogi has won 17 seats and Independents have been elected in 278 wards. Elections were held in 10 municipal corporations, 38 municipal councils and 103 Nagar Panchayats. Counting of votes began on Tuesday and is still underway as the state government decided to conduct polls on ballot papers instead of EVMs. Of 10 municipal corporations, the Congress has emerged victorious in seven. Of the 103 Nagar Panchayats, the Congress has bagged 48 and the BJP 40. There was a neck and neck fight between the Congress and the BJP in elections for municipal councils. Of the 38 municipal councils, the Congress and the BJP won 18 and 17 respectively. Reacting to the election result of urban local bodies, Chhattisgarh BJP chief Vikram Usendi said that the outcome reflects unpopularity of the Bhupesh Singh Baghel's government.
The Congress, however, called the election result victory for the party. "The results show the Congress has registered victory in more wards than the BJP, and we are comfortably leading in several others. Congress will have the maximum number of mayors and chairpersons in the state's urban bodies," Chhattisgarh Congress spokesperson Shailesh Nitin Trivedi was quoted as saying. The Congress formed government in Chhattisgarh in December last year.
