Chennai, March 6: With just days remaining for the Election Commission to announce the dates for the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Union government had decided to rename the Chennai Central railway station after former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MG Ramachandran. Also, Modi said that flights to and from Tamil Nadu would have in-flight announcements in the Tamil language. The Chennai railway station building – 146-year-old – is considered an iconic landmark, and MGR is a renowned face in Tamil Nadu.

The announcement by the Prime Minister was made in Kanchipuram on Wednesday amid launching several projects. Addressing a public rally, PM Modi said, “We have decided to rename the Chennai Central Station after the great MG Ramachandran. We are also seriously thinking about ensuring that flights to and from Tamil Nadu have in-flight announcements in Tamil language.” Mallikarjun Kharge Accuses PM Narendra Modi of Politicising Balakot Air Strike, Says ‘Nobody is Questioning Armed Forces'.

It is to be known that MGR is the founder of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, with whom Bharatiya Janata Party has made an alliance for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. The BJP would contest in five seats, out of the 40 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Along with this, BJP will also support the AIADMK in the by-polls which will happen for 21 constituencies in Tamil Nadu.

Earlier, in his address in Kilambakkam in Kancheepuram district on Tuesday, he praised MGR by stating that the latter ‘worked extensively for the downtrodden’ and his social welfare schemes ‘gave strength to the fight against poverty’. He said, “We have decided to rename the Chennai Central station after the great MGR. The Central Government is making continuous efforts towards the development of Tamil Nadu. We are committed to creating a developed Tamil Nadu that Amma Jayalalithaa dreamt of.”
