The Chandrapur assembly seat in Maharashtra is considered a stronghold of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Mungantiwar Sudhir Sachidananda of the BJP served as MLA of Chandrapur constituency for 15 years from 1995 to 2004.

Mumbai, September 27: The Chandrapur assembly seat in Maharashtra is considered a stronghold of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Mungantiwar Sudhir Sachidananda of the BJP served as MLA of  Chandrapur constituency for 15 years from 1995 to 2004. BJP's Shamkule Nanaji Sitaram is the sitting MLA from Chandrapur. He won the seat in 2009 as well. The incumbent legislator contested against Mahesh Marotrao Mendhe of the Congress. The BJP contested in an alliance with the Shiv Sena. Similarly, the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) fought polls together. The last date for filing nominations was October 4. The poll panel will scrutinise nomination papers on October 5. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is October 7. Polling in Chandrapur constituency will be held on October 21. In the 2014 Maharashtra assembly elections, the BJP emerged as the single largest party winning 122 seats. The Shiv Sena came second with 63 seats. Both the parties contested polls separately. The Congress and NCP bagged 42 and 41 seats respectively. Bahujan Vikas Aghadi and the PWP won three seats each, while the AIMIM secured two seats.

Bharipa Bahujan Mahasangh, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, Rashtriya Samaj Paksha and Samajwadi Party won one seat each. Independents candidates emerged victorious in seven constituencies.
