CAA-NRC Row: Sonia Gandhi Accuses PM Modi, Amit Shah of Provoking Communal Tensions, Calls JNU Violence 'BJP-Orchestrated'
During a meeting with the opposition parties over Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the National Population Register (NPR) on Monday, Gandhi said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah have misled people of the country and are continuing their provocative statements despite violence.
New Delhi, January 13: Congress Interim President Sonia Gandhi on Monday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for triggering communal tensions across the nation. The Congress leader said the government is spreading hatred and is trying to divide people of India along sectarian lines. During a meeting with the opposition parties over Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the National Population Register (NPR) on Monday, Gandhi said the Prime Minister and Home Minister have misled people and are continuing their provocative statements despite incidences of violence.
The meeting, which was called by the Congress party, was attended by leaders of 19 opposition parties. The meet comes at the backdrop of protests against CAA and NRC in parts of the nation. Taking a dig at the government over the violence in JNU earlier this month, Gandhi said the incidences of violence in the varsity is 'BJP-orchestrated'. "People watched in horror at BJP-orchestrated assault on JNU coming so soon after what happened in Jamia, BHU, Allahabad University and AMU and other institutions of higher learning. "Modi-Shah govt stands exposed for its inability to govern&provide security to people", Gandhi said. Gandhi claimed that the Modi-led government has let loose reign of oppression, spreading hatred and is trying to divide people. She added saying that there's unprecedented turmoil, the Constitution is being undermined and instruments of governance being misused. "They've contradicted their own statements of only weeks ago and continue with their provocative statements while remaining insensitive to the state suppression and violence that is increasingly becoming commonplace", Gandhi said. Gandhi added saying that in times of violence, the response of the police in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi has been shockingly partisan and brutal. "There have been nation-wide protests by youth supported by citizens. Immediate cause is CAA and NRC but they reflect widespread frustration & pent up anger, which is now out in the open", she said.
