New Delhi, October 24: The BJP, apart from suffering a setback in Haryana assembly elections, has also faced adverse outcome in some of the bypolls whose results are being declared today. Among the most glaring defeats being stared at by the party, includes their drubbing in Maharashtra's Satara and Gujarat's Radhanpur. The saffron party candidates in two constituencies - Udayanraje Bhosale and Alpesh Thakor are headed towards a defeat.
Thakor, who had won the Radhanpur constituency in 2017 when he contested on the Congress ticket, had to see re-elected after he defected to the BJP earlier this year. Ahead of the elections, he was being projected as the favourite to bag the seat. Bypoll Results 2019 Live News Updates: BJP Candidate Reena Kashyap Wins from Himachal Pradesh's Pachhad Seat.
Thakor, however, has been jolted by Congress leader Desai Raghubhai Merajbhai. By the time this report was published, the Congress candidate was leading by nearly 8,000 votes. With the counting of votes in its final stage and the vote share gap between the two candidates stretching to nearly 4 per cent, pollsters were firm that Desai would be clinching the seat.
In Maharashtra's Satara Lok Sabha seat, NCP-turned-BJP candidate Udayanraje Bhosale has been defeated by his former party colleague Shriniwas Dadasaheb Patil. The margin of votes stretched to over 80,000 votes, with Patil being voted by 52 per cent of the electorate, as compared to 42 per cent votes polled by Bhosale.
Notably, Bhosale is a three-time MP from the seat and had recently won in the parliamentary polls. In August, however, he jumped ship to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) citing the development plank of the Devendra Fadnavis government in the state.
On his defeat, NCP president Sharad Pawar lauded the voters of Satara, saying that "backstabbers" have been given a befitting response. "People have taught a lesson to opportunists and defectors," he added.
