Budget 2019: Punjab CM Amarinder Singh Disappointed With No Allocation For Guru Nanak Dev's 550th Birth Anniversary Celebrations

Chandigarh, July 5: Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh has marked his dissent against the central government for not making any allocation towards the celebration of 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism and first of the ten gurus of the Sikh community. The 550th Guru Nanak Gurpurab, also referred to as Guru Nanak Jayanti, will be observed on November 12 this year. The event holds huge significance for the Sikh community, which forms the majority in the state of Punjab.

Apart from allotting no amount of Guru Nanak Gurpurab celebrations, the Punjab CM also marked his dissent over the alleged inadequate allocations made for defence and manufacturing sectors.

"Union Budget 2019 had nothing to offer to any section of the society, ignoring even critical sectors like Defence and making no allocation for the historic 550th birth anniversary celebrations of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji," Singh said.

The 550th Gurpurab celebrations has, however, drawn attention of the Centre which has resumed dialogue with the Pakistani counterparts for opening of the interborder corridor to Kartarpur, where Gurudwara Sahib -- the final resting place of Guru Nanak Dev -- is located. The meeting will be held on July 14 in Wagah.

Significantly Pakistan has reportedly completed over 80 per cent of the work on the Kartarpur Corridor from the zero line to Gurdwara Sahib. Earlier, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan had announced that his government is committed towards opening the corridor by November 12.
